The Patient

By Sulaiman Daud

A pain in the gut —
Endure. This is not the first;
Nothing to worry.

Blood in the stool. Now,
This is scary. Hospital:
Tests, tests, and more tests.

The results come in.
The doctors and nurses, they
do not smile. They know.

Words like cold snowflakes
drift slowly around the room.

“Inoperable.”

“Stages two, three, four.
Chemo will slow it, but not
stop it. Months to live.”

His clenched fist falls, and
the light in his eyes goes out.
What use, of fighting?
