Eigengrau

by Lim Yan Sin

If only I could stand here idle now,
And live isolated in my estate
Because all I can see is eigengrau.

She, in her youth, pleads me to swear a vow
That I will never leave but stay to wait;
If only I could stand here idle now.

I cannot promise her I will not bow
To the chains pulling me as they dictate
Because all I can see is eigengrau.

She, confident, demands I do allow
That I let myself fall into her fate;
If only I could stand here idle now.

In truth, I do not understand; somehow,
She is spiteful and calls me an ingrate
Because all I can see is eigengrau.

For the Life of me, I do not know how
This tension between both sides will abate;
If only I could stand here idle now
Because all I can see is eigengrau.
